LARRY HAD ROLLED ONTO his side facing the cabin when Jessica went back below to look for the handcuff keys. He hated the helpless feeling of having his hands behind his back, unable to defend himself or Jessica. But he was unspeakably proud of her. Weeks ago, when she and Casey and Grant had first come aboard the boat, he wouldnât have thought she had it in her. But Jessica had proven that she was a survivor and a fighter. She had taken the initiative and without hesitation did what had to be done. Both of them were alive because of her, and her alone. But he was still helpless and getting more anxious by the minute to have his wrists unlocked.
âWhatâs taking so long, Jessica?â
âIâm trying, Larry. Thereâs nothing on his belt but a pistol. Theyâre not in his back pockets either. Iâm trying to move him so I can look in his front pockets.â
Larry knew it wouldnât be easy. The dead man had to weigh close to two hundred pounds, and heâd fallen into the narrow space at the foot of the companionway ladder where the cabin sole was less than two feet wide. There was no room to simply roll a limp body over in there. Jessica would have to somehow lift and turn all that weight to get to the manâs front pockets, and there wasnât a damned thing Larry could do to help. When he suddenly heard a shout from the beach and realized it was the third man from the skiff, the situation took on an entirely new urgency. He wasnât sure if Jessica heard it or not from down there, so he called to her, keeping his voice low enough that it wouldnât carry to the beach.
âJessica! Get up here! Keep your head down though and bring your rifle! Hurry!â He saw her face appear a second later in the drop board opening under the hatch.
âWhat is it Larry?â
âThe other one is back! I canât see him, but heâs over there on the island. Youâve got to take him out before he gets here in the skiff. Stay low and crawl out so he canât see you behind the cabin!â
Jessica did as he said, worming her way out onto the cockpit seat on her belly. She had Grantâs 10/22 with the same magazine, and Larry guessed there were probably 10 or 12 rounds left in it, though he hadnât counted the shots fired when she killed the two men.
âShoot him, Jessica! Just stay as low as you can though. Donât give him a target, because if you miss heâs going to start shooting back!â
Larry kicked and pushed with his feet to slide forward on the deck to the front crossbeam, where he could see around the cabin. He had just stuck his head out to look when he heard Jessica fire her first shot. The man on the beach was struggling to push the heavy skiff back into the water and the distance from where Jessica was shooting was about 50 yards.
